This is the Kanji symbol for Zen.

Kanji is the Japanese name for the Chinese characters used in much of their writing.

These symbols come from the Kan tribe who lived in China about 4000 years ago. Hence - Kanji.

The Japanese borrowed these symbols somewhere around 200 AD. However, Kanji alone could not adequately show their language.

Hence they developed a syllabary, which is similar to our alphabet, of simplified characters. It is this alphabet we now associate with Japanese, but Knaji was their first method of written record and is still widely recognised today.
